The text is in french but the commentary must be in English, however when citing text or words they should stay in french (don’t provide translation :))

Also, my professors were really strict on what they don’t want in the introduction: they don’t want a general contextualization (what I would normally do) either on the author or the text. They would have read and analysed the book many times before so they already know. They want us to start straight away and pick up details such as punctuations, the paste and length of the sentence etc. Lastly, I think it would be nice to include an overall opinion or judgment of the passage at the end

Write a commentary on the Nouvelle 35 from Marguerite de Navarre’s Heptaméron:

The purpose of a critical commentary is to analyse how the meaning of a small piece of text is conveyed by the particular words chosen by the author. As such, it is an exercise in close reading and should be firmly focused on the piece of writing in front of you; you should avoid generalisations about the work or the author. The commentary seeks to analyse how the text is significant, in two different senses of the word: what are the distinguishing features which make it notable? and how do they ‘signify’ or create meaning? The basic premise you should bear in mind is that the meaning (often considered the ‘content’) of a text is never independent of its form: form and meaning are inextricably linked.

The commentary should include:
Figure of speech antithesis, assonance, caesura, metaphor, homophone etc…
Structure

Point of view

Type of discourse

Vocabulary

Issues of versification (specific to commentaries on poems)

Punctuation

Tone

Syntax

Grammatical detail

Intertextual material

Cultural references
