FILM 1 — Paper #2 Advanced Analysis DUE: Thursday, Dec. 3 (no late papers)
1. Choose a film to examine (Contact, Rear Window, High Noon, The Odd Couple) and assemble a good set of materials to consider (draw from your notes).
Think about what we’ve read in Anatomy of Film in terms of breaking a film into techniques. “Direction” blankets many of the following:
-cinematography (composition, framing, camera movement, lighting)
-editing (order, transitions, tone, rhythm, sound, music)
-performance
-theme
-enhancing the image (color enhancement, visual effects)
-genre conventions
Also consider the film theories described in the textbook as a sort of “lens” to view the film through.
2. Develop your thesis. What do you want to say? Prove?
If you’re having trouble writing a thesis, consider the “Question and Answer” technique described in the prompt for Paper #1 (online). Keep your thesis specific and focused (in other words, don’t try to analyze too many elements).
3. Write the paper.
1. Introduction. First, give a brief summary (couple of sentences) of the film (you may introduce the director and/or major actors/actresses as well). Next, you need to move your discussion to the issue, technique, and/or theory that forms the basis for your thesis. Lastly, state your thesis (last line of the introduction).
Note: by including all the elements above in your introduction, you contextualize your thesis so that the reader is well acquainted with the film you’ve chosen, the issue/technique/theory you’re focusing on, and then what you have to say about it—i.e. your “take” (thesis).
2. Body paragraphs. Select specific material (scenes, actions, dialogue) from the film to support your thesis. Discuss and explicate fully. In other words, show how these examples from the film illustrate your theory.
3. Source use. You MUST use the textbook as your ONE and ONLY source (at least one citation). This source, when used in your paper (quotation, summary/paraphrase) must be
properly cited. No other source use allowed.
3 full pgs. (minimum), typed, double spaced
*source material must be properly cited (MLA form) and avoid using too much source material (source heavy). The source should only be used to help you develop or support an idea or point. *no late papers accepted (without instructor’s approval)
