Problem Statement:
Sustainability policies address many of the justifications why unions exist by promoting business integrity and employee wellbeing. Employee wellbeing breaks down into diversity and inclusion, talent development, talent recruitment, workplace safety, and wellness (Lockheed Martin, 2020) Unions cost the employee money with union duties, create less loyalty to an employer, promotes mediocrity by protecting low performers, hurt new employees through seniority rules. Many references compare RTW versus non-RTW states, but few look at how sustainability practices affect unions’ relevance. Predicted with President Donald Trump’s election would compromise union power, yet he won by winning the votes of a large percentage of union workers. (Hogler, June 2017) In the new age of sustainability do workers still need to pay unions dues to protect low performers and those with seniority.
