The whole purpose of writing is to add something to the conversation that

is already going on about your topic. What is something new that you can add? What new

perspective can you give? What interesting and original connections can you make? What position

are you taking within that conversation? What arguments can you make?

(Possible) Argument Structure:

 Opening Paragraph(s): This is all you. You should not be citing any sources in your

opening paragraph. The opening paragraph should give your Major Claim, identify the

context in which your argument is being made, and make a connection to the audience.

always necessary; it depends largely on what you imagine your audience already knows

 Warrant: this is all you. Warrants are your explanations of the connections that you

are making between the evidence and the minor claim. They further clarify what the

evidence is showing and how it proves the minor claim. A warrant, in essence, is

simply your own explanation of how the evidence proves the claim.
