Advanced Practice Registered Nurses can practice in various care environments. One of this is in the Emergency department wherein patients are presenting with different problems or symptoms that need to be taken care of. Two conditions that may have a significant impact on revenue in ED are Catheter-Associated Urinary Infection and Falls and/or Trauma (Joel, 2018). The APRN could order for insertion of a urinary indwelling catheter for accurate urinary output for a patient who had cardiac arrest, on mechanical ventilator and sedated, and is now on Targeted Temperature Management (TTM). Ideally, a urine sample could be check for Urinalysis right after the foley catheter is inserted. If initially the result is negative for infection and two days later, the patient develops symptoms showing infection and source is from the urine, the culprit could be Catheter-Associated Urinary Tract Infection (CAUTI). Another problem that could be encountered while in Emergency department is falls or trauma. It could happen when an elderly patient on Coumadin, who is already in the bed, without a bed alarm being turned on, attempts to go to the bathroom all of a sudden and trips on something, like an IV pole, hit his head and develops Subarachnoid Hemorrhage.
CAUTI and Falls/Trauma are incidents that are considered “never events” medical errors which should not have occurred in the first place (Joel, 2018). Since it happened in the hospital, the cost for treating the patients who had these medical errors might not be reimbursed to the hospital, hence a loss of revenue. The additional costs may include but not limited to extended hospital stay, additional antibiotics, diagnostic tests such as CT scan, and/or Xray for the patient who had a fall incident, possible surgery to attempt to fix the damage or injuries that have been caused by the fall, and a designated staff sitter to make sure the patient would not have another fall while in the hospital. Either way, the APNs would still treat the patients the same, if not, even more meticulous care plan as if standard procedures were followed diligently, those hospital-acquired conditions would have been prevented. But overall, APNs will still strive to provide a good quality care to patients, as how it should be.

Using the conditions listed in Box 11.1 in the Joel textbook, identify and discuss two different conditions that may have a significant impact on revenue in the care setting. Describe how these conditions might affect how APNs provide care in these settings?eference:
