Instructions
Create an annotated bibliography in which you list 7 to 10 scholarly sources as citations for research and annotations for each source. A thorough definition and description of annotated bibliographies are provided in the class reading Purdue OWL: Annotated Bibliographies.
Instructions for submitting assignments are in the Major Assignments (Drafts and Finals) folder.
This is a formal assignment, but it will contain your commentary about each source; therefore, the pronoun “I” is acceptable. However, do not use “you” or “your.” These are your thoughts and should not address or refer to a second person.
How Your Assignment Should Be Formatted:
MLA formatting:
a. Header with last name and page number in the upper, right hand corner of each page.
b. Heading with your name, my name, course name, and date (DD Month YYYY).
Topic
Thesis statement for your argumentative essay (this may change as your essay progresses, and that’s perfectly fine).
Bibliographic information (Citations): these will contain all available, required information about the source. The structure of each citation will depend on the source, itself.
. A citation structure for a website will not be the same as the structure for a book, and the citation structure for a book may not be the same for all books, depending on the number of authors, if it is a collective work, etc. This will be the trickiest part of the assignment.
a. There are numerous resources for creating proper citations. The best, in my opinion, is undoubtedly Citation Machine. Please become familiar with this resource. You will likely use it multiple times throughout your college career, and maybe even your professional career. A close second is, of course, the Purdue OWL. Though the OWL has information you can use to check your citations, it will not build them for you like Citation Machine.
Annotations: After reading your source (or the parts of the source you plan to use, such as a book chapter), you will summarize, assess, and reflect on the source in one or two paragraphs. The annotations will come directly after the bibliographic information for the source.
The annotated bibliography should be organized in alphabetical order according to the first word/name that appears in the bibliographic information of the source.
Personal Reflection (separate page):
. What did you learn about formal research and citations from this assignment?
a. Do you believe that you found the necessary information for your argumentative essay?
b. What did you learn about writing from this assignment? Did you notice anything in particular that you improved or realized you’re better at than you thought?
c. What editing/revision decisions did you make along the way and why? Don’t say, “because the instructor said.” After all, you have the choice to reject any feedback I give. Tell me why you think the edits or revisions you chose improved the assignment.
Reference this example for how your final draft should generally look.
Why the Reflection?
I’m glad you asked! At the end of the semester, you will be asked to create an e-portfolio in which you will showcase the work you completed for this course. Each of the pieces you include in the e-portfolio should have a brief introduction. I will ask for a reflection after each assignment, so that when it is time for you to introduce the assignment in your e-portfolio, you’ll have notes to jog your memory about the writing experience and some of the decisions you made. The e-portfolio is the final assignment for the semester and will be graded by me, but it will also be assessed by the Director of Composition.
