Multidimensional Family Therapy (MDFT)

Develop an MDFT case conceptualization (8–10 pages) and initial treatment plan for a family that you are currently working with or for a family portrayed in a popular movie that depicts adolescent struggle with enough detail about the adolescent and family dynamics to provide you with enough information to develop a clinical formulation (e.g., Thirteen or My Life as a House). Complete the MDFT Case Conceptualization Form (located in the 2FOR Toolbox) and develop treatment goals and objectives based on that conceptualization and your understanding of the MDFT model. The case conceptualization is a working, changing, document. It should be completed within 30 days of the opening of a case, and then updated routinely and when the therapist’s conceptualization has deepened, or when additional details have been acquired. After about 30 days, a therapist naturally begins to have a deeper understanding of the family patterns that are sustaining the adolescent’s problem behaviors. They begin to have a more sophisticated formulation of how the adolescent got off track and what is necessary to get them back on track. This starts, however, with the initial assessment and continues through the duration of treatment. The case conceptualization is not an interview. The case conceptualization content is crafted through multiple MDFT sessions between the therapist and the family members. Make sure to include formulation about: ● How do the child/adolescent and parent(s) perspectives on the problem(s) differ? ● How would your conceptualization of the problem inform your work in engaging and maintaining alliances with both the adolescent and parent(s)? ● How will you help the family to see there is something in this for each of them? ● What strengths (characteristics, patterns, experiences) will you build on to motivate continued effort on the part of each of the family members? ● Identify at least one goal in the adolescent, parent, family, and extrafamilial domains that will demonstrate a planful, well-integrated conceptualization.
