Motivations
The actions of many of the characters in ‘The Crucible” by Arthur Miller , spring from a complex web of motivations. Some of the characters later decide that they have chosen the wrong action and change their behavior. This switch, again, often motivated by number of factors. Compose a one-paragraph essay in which you identify a charcter from “The Crucible” and then explain their original course of action and how they change. Describe what you think their motivation is both originally and lafter the change. Support your ideas with at least two specific examples from the text.

One character from “The Crucible” who experiences a significant change in action is John Proctor. Initially, Proctor is motivated by a desire to protect his reputation and avoid the social and legal consequences of admitting to adultery. He denies his affair with Abigail and tries to convince his wife, Elizabeth, to do the same. However, as the witch trials escalate and Proctor witnesses the injustice and harm being inflicted on others, he becomes motivated by a sense of morality and a desire to do what is right. This leads him to confess to the affair and take a stand against the corrupt court. For example, he refuses to falsely accuse others of witchcraft and ultimately sacrifices his own life rather than betray his conscience.
