You are to summarize relevant information from five research articles that relate closely to your chosen research topic (not a copy of the Abstract from each article) – not from obscure articles that do not relate closely to your research topic. One of the five articles should be “theoretical” and have information about one or more theories in psychology that relate to your research topic (e.g., Piaget’s Theory of Cognitive Development, Human Information Processing Theory). One of the five articles should be a “review” article that summarizes a wide background of research studies related to your research topic (e.g., Psychological Review, Annual Review of Psychology). You should be able to locate each of these two types of articles by including the words “theory” and “review” along with words you use in searches for your research topic (e.g., in the PsycINFO data base, in the scholar.google.com data base).
Each article summary should be about one half page to one page and include information that will be most useful to you when you begin working on a literature review (e.g., research hypothesis or hypotheses, type of research design employed, important variables in the study, how the outcome variable was measured).
For your “review” article I would suggest that you list up to 10 studies cited and briefly mention the most important idea from each article that you feel will relate to your proposed study. For your “theory” (or model) article make sure you brief summarize the main aspect of the theory as it relates to your research topic and how you think you might utilize the theory in your literature review that you will be writing.
