Leadership Essay

In this assignment, you are asked to think about how you might show leadership and/or have impact in your career.
Types of Leadership:

Some leaders think more broadly about their leadership and impact, considering how to make the world a better place. Here is an example of this type of impact in this TED Talk:

Other leaders find themselves suddenly facing a dilemma, seeing something is wrong in their organization. Here is an example of a whistleblower, who set off a chain of events at a startup medical services company:

Finally, some people lead by excellence in the details of their profession, and knowing how to “think big.” Margaret Hamilton is someone you’ve probably never heard of, but her attention to detail in the technical aspects of her work paved the way for other-worldly accomplishments.

While these individuals may not be accountants, their examples of leadership and impact are very relevant to various careers in accounting. For example, the frauds and Enron and MCI were discovered and exposed by internal auditors who showed courage, a commitment to doing the right thing, and attention to detail.

Review the sources referenced above and reflect on these examples of leadership and impact.
Reflect on your own values, talents, capabilities and expected opportunities.
Write a one-page memo which answers one or more of the following questions:
What does leadership mean to you?

What leadership traits will you bring to your organizations?

What impact do you hope to have in your career?

What values are most important to your view of leadership?

While you are free to organize your reflection in any way you see fit, the memo should show clear organization.

There are no right or wrong answers for this assignment, but you must show evidence of having viewed/read the assigned material.
