Paper Assignment #2

The Synthesis Paper: “They Say” Paper

For your second major paper (DUE WEEK NINE-NOT THIS WEEK!), you will be composing a paper of 3 ½ to 4 pages in length that synthesizes three of six articles read on the topic of college (listed below). You will not be composing an argument, but rather an informative paper presenting the issue of college as illustrated from three authors. The paper will showcase the points presented in each article and the controversy within it. You must quote (not overly) from each reading (three ONLY) -recall Chapter Three from the text on how to introduce quotes and how to cite your three sources throughout the body of the paper. Do not use “I” in this paper.

Overall Criteria:

-3 ½ to 4 Pages in Length

-Include Header in left corner (Course, Assignment, Your Name, and Date)

-Your Last Name and Page number inserted in top right corner (go to Insert, then select Page Number-Type your name in front of the number and hit the spacebar once)

-Must use three articles (no more, no less!) from the following: “Hidden Intellectualism,” “Should Everyone Go to College?” “Two Years are Better Than Four,” “For First Generation College Students, a Disappearing ‘College Experience’ Could Have Grave Consequences,” “College is Worth It, But Campus Isn’t,” and “”Is College Worth the Cost?”

-Clear Introduction: Which articles will be synthesized? What is the general discussion and issues presented in the articles? (This is an informative paper not an argumentative paper. You will be presenting the main arguments and premise of each article with textual support.)

-Body Paragraphs-Indent each section one tab-Organize by article or other logical development.

-Must use direct quotes from the three articles (no less than two each). Use MLA Format as illustrated in OWL and the course PowerPoint on MLA.

-Use 12 Font, 1 inch margins, double-spacing -YOU DO NOT NEED TO DO A WORKS CITED—but use parenthetical citations. The author noted that “it was valid” (Smith 2).
