Gender norms and Racial bais in the study of the modern “Madame Bovary”

Length: 7-8 pages, using standard fonts and page formatting, and double spacing
Follow MLA standards for citations and formatting; info on MLA can be found on websites like the Purdue University OWL (on-line writing lab) and University of North Carolina’s on-line writing center
Research component: you must consult a minimum of two secondary sources—these may be critical/interpretive sources and/or factual/informational sources, depending on your topic and approach. This means there will be a minimum of three entries on your works cited page—your primary text (the work you’re choosing to write about) and the two secondary sources.
You may write about any of the works we completed since the first paper assignment and midterm:
Madame Bovary, Waiting for Godot, The Three Sisters, and The House of the Spirits; if you are interested in doing so, you may write about one/some of the short stories in the Borges collection, Ficciones, that we did not cover in class. You may choose to discuss the works from any legitimate approach—for example, a traditional character analysis, a formalist analysis of the structural and plot decisions/devices the author utilized, analysis of symbolism present int the work, an exploration of Freudian or Jungian psychological issues, moral or philosophical ideas present or propagated in the work, feminist or Marxist issues explored in the work, historical/biographical contexts for the work, etc. This final approach is most likely to be applied to
The House of the Spirits since it is acknowledged as fictionalized history of a specific identifiable country— so informational/factual sources would be as appropriate as critical/interpretive ones; but that does not rule out drawing on historical or biographical material for the other works/authors. In the case of more recent (and perhaps still-living) authors such as Beckett, Borges, and Allende, you may find statements they made in interviews, on websites, in essays, reviews, letters, etc. that can be legitimately cited as additional sources. Observe the academic convention of using your opening paragraph to establish and frame your topic, while building to a
debatable, interpretive thesis statement, that you will go on to develop and support with specific evidence from the text and your secondary sources.
As always, edit and proofread carefully, and upload your paper to Canvas/Turnitin by the start of class on Monday, December 7.
