Research Paper Part 1
Part 1 – find and watch three videos of or about hip hop dance. Then select one work from the criteria below for your research paper. Write a brief response to all three videos. Indicate what your video selection to do further research on is and the reason(s) why you have selected this for your paper by the deadline.
It should be a dance that gives you a strong emotional reaction because it either confirms or conflicts with your own cultural understanding. Use this dance to explain your own cultural preferences concerning the subject.
Think about the following ideas as you watch and prepare to write your paper (Part 1 is selection of a work/artist not the actual paper, these questions are to help you in the selection process):
What does the dance mean to you? What do you think the dance is “about”?
How does the movement use of the Elements of Dance (space, time, and energy/force) to create meaning in the work for you?
Describe and comment on the music. Consider the following questions: did the music play an important role in the dance, and did the music influence the form of the dance or vice versa?
Research about the dance you watch and the culture/time period. How does the movement create a greater understanding of the culture/history?
