American Psycho – Serial Killers
Students will select any one of the films mentioned in either required textbook (Hickey or Fox) or on the selected movie list (on Canvas) and analyze how the portrayal of the killer, victim, and/or investigation is (dis)similar to what we have learned about murder in the real world.
In your paper, you must briefly summarize the movie and thoroughly discuss how it relates to myths, concepts, stereotypes, or theories presented in class materials. In your critique, you may find the film accurately portrays the realities of murder, or you may find the film merely pushes popular myths about murder. Either way, you must provide your informed opinion of and reaction to the film. You must also broaden the context to discuss what this means for our knowledge of and responses to murder. In other words, what should we do with this information? What are the implications for crime control?
You must cite at least 3 academic sources in your critique of the film, not including our required textbooks. You should cite from peer-reviewed academic journals that you find through the university’s library (lib.umn.edu). You should not cite from anything else you find online unless you are certain its original source is a peer-reviewed academic journal.
This paper should follow all regular formatting requirements (12-point, Times New Roman Font, proper grammar and paragraph structure).
