The first essay of the semester will be a comparison/contrast of two stories we have read this semester. You will develop your own individual thesis focusing on the theme, characterization, plot, setting, or philosophy presented in two stories. You cannot cover all of these in this paper, so you must limit your information to suit your thesis. Needless to say, you will need to select stories that have a connection in one of these areas and also relate directly to the theme of the class which is Victim versus Victimizer..
The paper should be relatively short: 2000 words maximum (approximately 4 pages typed); double spaced; 1 1/2″ margins at top and bottom; 1″ margins on the sides of the paper. It should have your own original title that has no underline or quotation marks and is in the same font as the rest of the essay: NO LARGE OR BOLD titles; courier or courier new 12 pt font or larger. The only time you should use quotation marks is when referring to the title of a story or when including a brief, direct quote. Shorter or longer papers than assigned will not receive good grades. Part of the task of this essay is to present your ideas clearly and succinctly. Plagiarized papers will receive an F and will be forwarded to the dean.
Direct quotes from the stories should appear in the essay, but they must be brief. This paper should have no block quotes or quotes so long that they should have appeared in block form.
