In this discussion, students will demonstrate an understanding of the goals of incarceration, inmate classification, prison programs, and various correctional careers.
Consider the Module 3 and Module 5 readings on inmate classification.
In your own words, what is the purpose of inmate classification?
In what way(s) may classification lead to conflict between security and rehabilitation?
How does this conflict reflect what you learned about the three models/goals of incarceration in Chapter 10?
The Module 5 readings review the different types of prison programs. Using reliable sources, research one example of a prison program discussed in the text that you want to know more about.
In your own words, tell us about the program you researched, including what it is and what services it offers inmates.
Be sure to briefly discuss which of the five categories of prison programs (discussed in Chapter 14 of your text) this example falls under.
Consider the rehabilitative models for programs, including educational, vocational, and therapeutic. Discuss which model the program you researched would fall under and why.
Identify and describe at least one type of correctional personnel that would be involved in the program you researched, including their general roles and responsibilities in the program. Examples here include (but are not limited to) psychologist, psychiatrist, sociologist, educator, and correctional officer.
Consider what you learned in the Module 5 readings.
Based upon what you learned in the readings, which prison programs are more effective: educational or vocational?
Be sure to discuss the advantages and disadvantages of these programs in your response.
The Muddiest Point: In two to three sentences, identify one concept or topic from the Module 5 readings that you still have questions about.
Continuing the Discussion: Considering the Module 5 textbook readings, create one discussion question related to a topic you found interesting in the readings. Your discussion question should thoughtfully and substantially further the discussion on the module materials (i.e. it should not be able to be answered with a simple “yes” or “no,” or with a simple definition).
In your three responses to your classmates:
See if you can provide further resources and/or clarification for your classmates’ “Muddiest Point” discussion.
Address your classmates’ “Continuing the Discussion” question by doing at least one of the following:
Provide an answer to the question using your text and at least one additional, reliable external resource.
Discuss and provide the information for a relevant, reliable external resource, including in your discussion why the resource is relevant to your classmates’ questions.
Review the posts of your classmates in this module discussion forum and summarize some themes in the responses.
