Critical Reflection Paper #3 – Disclosing an incurable STI to a Sexual Partner
Watch the TEDx Talk by Ella Dawson “STIs aren’t a consequence. They’re inevitable.”
Watch the Ted Talk by Elizabeth Pisani “Sex, Drugs, and HIV-Let’s Get Rational.”
Read Chapter 8: Sexually Transmitted Infections/Diseases, take the “Self Discovery STI Testing” assessment on page 307 and re-read “In Touch with Your Sexual Health-Disclosing an STI to a sexual partner” on page 307.
Effective sexual communication is an important safe sex behavior. Disclosing infection with an incurable sexually transmitted diseases (STIs) to a partner can be the most difficult communication challenge of all. The information in this chapter is essential to an effective sexual philosophy. Combining accurate information and education with carefully considered attitudes and goals will help you know who you are, know what you want and don’t want, and plan ahead. The goal of this chapter is not to frighten you away from sexual intimacy but rather provide you with a solid base of knowledge about STIs: what they are, their symptoms (or lack thereof), how they are transmitted, how they are diagnosed, and available treatment options. Incorporating this knowledge into your sexual philosophy will help you stop the spread of STIs rather than become another STI statistic.
Two prompt scenario:
Imagine that you meet someone you really like and you begin to date. As the relationship progresses, you become closer and more intimate, but the relationship still has not progressed beyond the kissing and touching stage. Your feelings for each other are deepening, and you know you are falling in love. Then one night, this person sits you down for a serious talk and discloses that he or she tested positive for Herpes. What do you think your reaction would be? Would you continue to see the person? Why or why not?

GUIDELINES FOR CRITICAL REFLECTION PAPERS
Critical Reflection Papers have a three-part purpose. First, they are intended to demonstrate your analysis of the course readings, news reports, or other media pertaining to Human Sexuality. They can help you keep track of important ideas that you will need to review again in preparing your Human Sexuality Empowerment Research Paper, and can also provide possible topics for your group project. Most importantly, they are intended for you to give your critical reflection of the course materials and how it relates to your lived experiences.
Papers must be double-spaced, at least two pages in length. It must have a title page that includes your name, page numbering, and include references. Strongly suggest but not required to use of APA style. Make sure that your paper is in the form of an essay with an introduction, body and conclusion. Extra credit will be given for APA formatting.
Your Critical Reflection Paper should demonstrate comprehension and analysis of the assigned readings and/or class discussions, or to news reports in newspapers, popular magazines, or other media, and contain a critical and thoughtful reaction to the material. Your reflection should make up the majority of the paper. Your voice, reaction, and critical thoughts are the most important part of this assignment.
What to Avoid:
A Critical Reflection Paper is NOT a book report! You must give some brief summary of the reading/media in order to write a good paper, but only summarize what is necessary to write your reaction. It is also important to avoid vague impressions about the reading/media. Base everything you say in something specific, such as a quote, or a concept or an argument. Dig into something solid. Make sure you make proper reference to these specific details.
Each reaction paper is worth a maximum of 20 points. In order to receive maximum points, please make sure that the paper is free of grammatical errors, and includes a title page, reference page and for extra credit APA -formatted citations and reference page.
