Overview: The Corbett Report is an independent, listener-supported alternative news source. It operates on the principle of what is referred to as “open source intelligence” and provides podcasts, interviews, articles and videos about breaking news and important issues from 9/11 to the police, geopolitics, the central banking system, and other controversial issues and topics often ignored or reported or “spun” differently in the mainstream, major news media. James Corbett, a Canadian, has been living and working in Japan since 2004. He started The Corbett Report website in 2007 as an outlet for independent investigative journalism and the critical analysis of politics, society, history, and economics. Since then, he has written, recorded and edited thousands of hours of audio and video media for the website, including a podcast and several regular online video series. He is the lead editorial writer for The International Forecaster, the e-newsletter created by the late Bob Chapman. Corbett’s work has been carried online by a variety of websites, and his videos have garnered more than 50,000,000 views on YouTube alone. His satirical piece on the discrepancies in the official account of the events that transpired on September 11,2001, “9/11: A Conspiracy Theory,” was posted to the web on September 11, 2011 and has so far been viewed nearly three million times. Corbett has been accused of being a “conspiracy theorist” and promulgating “far right” and “conservative” “conspiracy theories” because of his content and the questions he poses and the critical perspectives he takes. Corbett’s political perspective is not “right wing,” “conservative,” or “far right.” In fact, he has described himself as an “anarchist,” a political position with which most in the United States are unfamiliar. He is also not from the United States of a citizen of the United States. “Media Bias/Fact Check,” a source that fact checks claims made in the public domain, is one entity that has condemned Corbett as a “conspiracy theorist.”

Corbett encourages the public to do their own research, to investigate the claims of those who hold power such as government officials and the various authorities who have the ideological and hegemonic power to make decisions that affect the public in a myriad of ways. In both the interview with Dan Williams of kla.tv (another independent news and opinion site on social media that has been criticized by mainstream organizations such as “NewsGuard”), Corbett explains why he disagrees with an article in Forbes, a mainstream, established, highly-regarded publication, that discourages the public from conducting their own research on scientific issues (https://archive.is/uWkeA). According to Corbett, independent study, research, and investigation are important bedrocks of a free society and individual freedom. In fact, all of his podcasts and video routinely provide show notes which include sources and links to his sources and information for his audience to investigate so that they may do draw their own conclusions. The Corbett Report operates according to a libertarian theory of the press, which emphasizes:

1) journalists and news outlets/entities researching, investigating, reporting, and providing opinions independently, without being beholden to or influenced by other news outlets, industries, organizations, institutions, groups, and individuals

2) journalists and news outlets/entities acting as “watchdogs” that hold accountable those in power and question and research claims/statements they make

3) journalists and news outlets/entities reporting a multiplicity of ideas and making it clear that there is more than one perspective or point-of-view on important subjects, issues, and problems

4) journalists and news outlets/entities avoiding conflicts of interest that impede the ability to act as watchdogs in order to report information that may be unflattering or damaging to groups, individuals, organizations, institutions, and entities that hold power

Instructions: Respond to one of the following in a two-page, typed or computer-generated paper (as per the instructions provided above). Be sure to proofread your response before uploading it to Blackboard:

1) Why does James Corbett state that audiences should conduct their own research on the subjects and topics reported in the news media, including his own? Be detailed and specific.

2) According to Corbett, the Forbes article, You Must Not ‘Do Your Own Research’ When It Comes to Science,” (https://archive.is/uWkeA), is illogical and unreasonable. What, specifically, does Corbett state makes the Forbes article illogical and unreasonable and even potentially dangerous? Be detailed and specific.

3) Are “Media Bias/Fact Check” and “NewsGuard” a credible source of information? Why or why not? Be detailed and specific. Read the report by Media Bias/Fact Check that provides its description and opinion of The Corbett Report (https://mediabiasfactcheck.com/the-corbett-report/).

4) What authority do “NewsGuard” and“Media Bias/Fact Check” have to make their claims and be trusted by those researching the veracity of various news and information websites and news content producers? Why might they not be? Be detailed and specific.
