Choose and list a course concept that you observed during Baby Day. Course concepts MUST be chosen from the list provided in this handout (page 5). If course concepts not on the list are used for the final paper, the group will earn zero points for that concept.


Explanation. Tell me about this concept based on your assigned readings, lectures, and/or other reputable sources you may find online (i.e., outside sources must be limited to peer-reviewed journal articles. Other sources will not be valid for this assignment and result in point deductions for the group). This should be a complete definition of the course concept and will be about 1 paragraph in length. This should be a thorough definition and explanation that includes enough description and elaboration to demonstrate a deep understanding of the concept. Students should further clarify the definition of the concept by providing examples not related to the Baby Day Observation and/or discussing any relevant research regarding the concept. See example given later on in this handout on page 6. Be sure to give proper credit to the author(s) by using APA in-text citations and providing the corresponding full APA citation in the references page. Remember to properly paraphrase, which includes using both your own words and own sentence structure. Do NOT use direct quotes. Points will be deducted for the group if one or more direct quotes are used (even if properly cited).


Example. Connect and apply the course concept to what you observed during the observation. Fully and objectively describe what the child or the adult caregiver was doing that demonstrated the concept. This will be approximately 3-5 sentences in length and must clearly demonstrate the concept. See example given later on in this handout on pages 6-7.


Justification. Interpret and analyze your example. This part should be at least 1 paragraph in length. It is not enough to simply give the definition of the concept and then state that it was observed. Doing so will earn very little points. Students must explain why their example is a valid example that accurately showcases the given concept. See example given later on in this handout on page 7.


Repeat steps 1-4 for all 6 selected course concepts from the list.


This Group Baby Day Outline is to be completed and submitted as a GROUP. To submit the assignment, assign ONE GROUP MEMBER to log onto Blackboard, click on Content  Assignment Submissions  Group Baby Day Outline and upload the Word document. Submissions will be opened closer to the due date.


Group Baby Day Paper (Due 11/2 or 11/9 at noon depending upon your Consultation Day)

For those in groups that signed up for Consultation Days 1 or 2, the Group Baby Day Paper is due on 11/2 at noon. For those in groups that signed up for Consultation Days 3 or 4, the Group Baby Day Paper is due on 11/9 at noon.


Using feedback from the professor on your Group Baby Day Outline, each group will edit and add to their rough draft (AKA the Group Baby Day Outline) to produce a paper that is 6 FULL double-spaced pages (not including title and references pages). The final paper does not follow a traditional APA research paper format. Instead, your final paper will follow an outline format with paragraphs for each part of the paper (i.e., Explanation, Example, and Justification as detailed above), with APA in-text citations where needed, a title page that follows APA format, and an APA style references page.


Note that the bare minimum is 6 FULL pages, meaning that the sixth page needs to be a full page. Do not exceed 7 pages. Again, note that this page count does NOT include the title and references pages. The page count refers only to the body of the paper. Group papers are still required to have APA style title and references pages.


A detailed rubric for how the professor will be grading this assignment will be provided later in the semester. Once posted, the professor will send out an announcement. Said rubric will be available on Blackboard by clicking on Content  Assignment Instructions  Baby Day Paper Rubric.

Follow the conventions of APA formatting. This includes using proper APA in-text citations when necessary and including title and references pages that follow APA formatting. There will also be a helpful link from Purdue University listed on the last slide for additional APA formatting resources. For additional questions on formatting, feel free to ask the professor. Any information used from lectures would need to cited as well. Groups can use the following format for PowerPoint lectures and will need to cite for each lecture:

Late assignments will NOT be accepted. Therefore, make sure to submit the assignment early enough to account for technical difficulties. The usual 15-minute grace period will be given.


No due date extensions will be granted unless there is an emergency that overlaps with the assignment deadline. Proper documentation of the personal, medical, or family emergency and a filled out Absence Excuse Form must be provided immediately. Due date extensions due to an emergency is up to the discretion of the professor. The maximum extension given for emergencies may be anywhere between one to seven days depending upon circumstances.

No direct quotations are allowed because quotations do not demonstrate your understanding of the material. You must learn to effectively paraphrase. This means refrain from merely changing a few words around. You must utilize your own words AND own sentence structure. You will NOT receive credit for directly quoted material even if it is properly cited. Points will be deducted for use of direct quotations, which will impact the group grade on the paper.


Papers must be typed and double-spaced. Use standard 1 inch margins and Times New Roman in 12-point font. The last page of this handout contains a template that your group should use to organize the paper.
