In John Keats’ poem, “Ode to Nightingale,” examine stanza 1. The poet falls into a reverie while listening to an actual nightingale singing to him in the darkness. What type of feelings does listening to the bird produce for the speaker? How are these feelings paradoxical and what do they express?

In stanza 2, how and why does the speaker want to “leave the world unseen” (20)? Since his goal is to join the bird, what quality or qualities of the bird does he want to experience? How might alcohol enable him to achieve that desire?

In stanza 3, characterize the real world which the poet describes. What is the relationship of the bird to the world the poet describes? By implication, what kind of world does the nightingale live in? (Is it the same as or different from the poet’s?)

In stanza 4, the speaker contrasts his mode of experience (poetry) to the “dull brain” that “perplexes and retards” (line 4). What way of approaching life does this line reject? What does the speaker mean when he says that he will join the bird “on the viewless [invisible] wings of Poesy” (33)? In other words, how has the speaker figuratively joined the nightingale?

Stanza 5 describes the pastoral landscape among the flowering trees at night, through the images of scent and sound. In stanza 6, what does the speaker wish for in this stanza as he has often done in his poetry as he states? Why does he know he cannot wish for this even though it would mean “To cease upon the midnight with no pain” (56)?

In stanza 7, what has the bird come to symbolize? What does the speaker mean when he says, “Thou wast not born for death, immortal Bird!” (61)? How can the bird be immortal? How is it possible that this bird’s voice was heard “In ancient days by emperor and clown” (64)?

In stanza 8, the poet, like the nightingale, has returned to the real world. The bird flies away to another spot to sing. The bird’s song becomes a “plaintive anthem” and fainter. Is Keats’s description of the bird’s voice as “buried deep” a reference only to its physical distance, or does the phrase have an additional meaning? Has the speaker in this poem changed as a result of his visionary experience? For instance, has his life been improved in any way, or has he been damaged in any way?
