Benchmark 4: Topic Research – Group 1: Health and Healthcare- Book: Levenstein, Harvey | Fear of Food: A History of Why We Worry about What We Eat
This link will take you to book to read
For this benchmark, you’ll read your book individually and do some additional research with the goal of getting a better idea of:
What specific problem(s) you might be able to address/fix related to your topic
The historical factors that are currently contributing to the problems in different ways
As you learn more about your topic, begin to inform yourself more on exactly what problem(s) you want to address with your campaign. What is it specifically you want to stop or start? What do you want to see change? For example, if I am creating an anti-smoking campaign with the aim of stopping people from smoking in the US, I first need to understand how many smokers there are in the US, when they started smoking, what the health impacts are, what the death rates are, and so forth. I would need concrete information to help me establish the problems associated with the issue of smoking to make a case that those problems need to go away. Using our library guide (Links to an external site.), search through relevant resources listed in the black tabs on the left side of the page to find information about at the different problems related to your issue.
For process, do the following:
Read your book – what noteworthy problems did the author discuss that would be worth addressing in your campaign? Identify at least 3.
Do some outside research on each of these problems – you will use this information to further establish the extent and impact of the problems you’ve identified (remember the library guide here (Links to an external site.))
Then, write a research summary – this is what you will share this with your group in a discussion board. In this summary, include:
A detailed paragraph summarizing the book you read – what was the author’s primary purpose and argument? Then note the three problems that you’ve pulled from the book that you’ll discuss next.
Three additional detailed paragraphs, each of which address a specific problem. These paragraphs should include both in-text citations from your book and other sources. I want each paragraph to have a minimum of three sources. Each paragraph might address a theme (e.g., health, environment, etc.) or might be more specific to a problem you want to address (e.g., lung cancer). In addition to your three detailed paragraphs, you might include a list of other possible problems that you and your group should consider researching and addressing.
Full citations and bibliography in APA
After you have posted your detailed list of problems, you need to review the posts of your group members. You’re then asked to decide together which problems you want to address. By Friday, you and your group need to have some discussion on here to figure out what problem(s) you want to address.
